                                    Meet Our Chess Lady  

 If you have a talent or flair for sports, you can utilize your talent as well a gain a lot of benefits for example; a scholarship, an after studies job, popularity as well as an immerse feeling fulfillment. One would think this is only possible in the United States of America or the Uk, well I am delighted to tell you that here in Nigeria, there are opportunities for teenagers to fulfill their potentials in sports as well as excel in conventional schooling. Palm youth magazine had an interview with Barr. Emoh Adoga, who played chess as a teenager, got involved in many competitions and won medals. She also excelled in conventional schooling and she is a practicing advocate of the federal republic of Nigeria.

    Interview  with former chess player, Emoh Adoga.

1.   What do you do presently?

  I'm a lawyer, I'm currently combining active law practice with rice farming.

2.   How did you start playing chess and how old were you then?

I was sixteen years and got introduced into the world of chess by a friend.

3.   What competitions did you get involved in and when?

I represented Bayelsa state at three national sports festival. 2006,  2009, 2011. I also took in national chess championships.

4.   What medals did you win?

I won silver medals in blitz and individual board. I also won NLNG and Bayelsa quarterly tournaments on four occasions

5.   How were you able to combine schooling with sports?

I had to divide my time for school training and tournaments usually clashes with exams, I virtually didn't  a social life.

6.   What benefits did you get from combining chess and conventional schooling?

I got employed by Bayelsa state sports council and that really made life easier on campus, I also enjoyed the travels and opportunity. Also, chess enhances the brain so I developed my ability retain and retrieve super sharp reflex and improved intelligence.  Also,  the exposure and travel experiencing different places and cultures.

7.   What were the challenges you faced, combining chess with conventional schooling?

Chess is quite distracting and mentally tasking. It  drained my energy, also constant envy from teammates who weren't as good as I am, the stiff rivalry. However, winning was a booster that kept me going.
